How Barndominiums Can Save You on Construction Costs

For years, when it came time to build a new home, the first order of business was picking out a floor plan. Building plans range from simple, box-like ranch-style homes on flat lots to expansive mansions built on the side of a cliff. Traditionally, you would work with a general residential contractor to determine pricing and timelines and then you were in business.

But times are changing. There has been a shift in how we, as a society, approach building our dream homes. For those who prioritize efficiency and budget, stepping away from the traditional approach can lead to significant savings. In response, builders and plan providers have adapted to meet these evolving needs.

One increasingly popular alternative is the barndominium. In this blog, we’ll be discussing how breaking from tradition and embracing a barndominium can save you on construction costs!

The Barndominium

Commercial construction costs per square foot have historically remained well below those of residential builds. Barndominiums take advantage of this by adopting many of the same techniques.

The first cost-saving feature is in the design. Barndominiums tend to be much simpler, often with fewer corners than custom homes. If you’ve ever built a house, you know those corners can get expensive. Thanks to the geometry you learned in high school, you might recall that each additional corner not only adds costly linear footage but also reduces usable interior square footage.

That’s why a square – or close to it – is often the most cost-efficient shape. It provides the greatest area using the least perimeter (linear feet), making it an ideal base.

Barndominium Structure

While barndominiums aren’t always perfect squares, they often come close. Another common feature is that they’re built on slabs, which can be a major cost-saver if your site allows for it.

Some barndominiums are even steel buildings. But don’t let that throw you off, unlike your local retail dollar store, the exterior finishes can be customized to add a true “home” feel. These types of buildings often come in pre-sized kits. Once the concrete is poured, the entire structure – roof and all – can be erected in just a few days.

Other barndominiums start out as what’s known as a pole barn, which also goes up quickly and offers a lower-cost route to getting your home “dried in” (i.e., protected from the elements) in a short amount of time.
