The cow in your camera roll has a longer pedigree than most royal houses. Highland cattle trace to Scotland as far back as the 6th century — one of the oldest cattle breeds on Earth — and the story of how they got from those hills to our pasture is the backbone of our Built for the Highlands quiz.
Nature ran the breeding program
Nobody designed the Highland. The rugged, remote Scottish Highlands ran natural selection for centuries: only the fittest, most adaptable animals survived to pass anything on. Everything guests love about the breed — the coat, the hardiness, the easy calving — was earned the hard way.
The Kyloe and the Highlander
The breed originally came in two classes. The Kyloe — slightly smaller and usually black — roamed the islands off Scotland's west coast; the larger, reddish class held the Highlands themselves. Today they're one breed with both stories in its blood, which is why that traditional color list runs from red through black, dun, brindle and silver.
From the Hebrides to all fifty states
A coat built to beat a Scottish winter turns out to acclimate to nearly anything. Highlands now live in all fifty U.S. states, and their moderate frame suits a small East Tennessee family farm just as well as a big western operation. The breed traveled because everything about it travels.
History you can brush
Reading about a 1,400-year-old breed is one thing. Standing in a field brushing one is another. Our Highland Cow Experiences are the second one.
