Match the Field Map: How Cedar Pond’s Seven Fields Work

Open hayfields and grazing pasture rolling across Cedar Pond Farms, the seven lettered fields of the farm’s field map

Most farms you visit are scenery. Ours has a map — seven fields, lettered A through G, each with its own job through the seasons — and guests who learn it before they arrive see a working farm instead of a pretty backdrop. That's the whole idea behind our Match the Field Map quiz.

A, B and C lead a double life

Three of our fields are hayfields in summer — cut and baled to feed the herd through the cold months — and then the herd itself moves in to graze them as pasture through fall and winter. Same ground, two jobs, every single year.

Field D never gets a day off

Field D is the corral field — in use every day of the year, whatever the season. It's the farm's front office, if the front office had hooves.

E and F: too steep for the tractor

Two of our fields are never hayed at all — not because the grass isn't good, but because the ground is too steep for the tractor. So E and F stay year-round pasture, and the herd handles the hills the machinery can't. When you visit, you'll know exactly which hillside that is.

And G runs on the A/B/C rhythm

Field G keeps the same seasonal beat as A, B and C: hayfield in spring and summer, pasture in fall and winter. Seven fields, one working calendar.
