A Highland calf arrives at just 65–70 pounds — and those small, vigorous babies are the big reason the births go so easily. It's also why ranchers cross Highland bulls onto first-calf heifers of other breeds: calving ease is one of the breed's most valued gifts to the whole cattle world.
Mamas for the long haul
Highland cows are famous for superior maternal instincts and milking ability — a Highland raises a healthy calf that's genuinely ready to go at weaning. And they keep doing it: Highland mamas commonly produce into their teens. Get between one and her calf, though, and you'll meet the other side of those instincts — the horns aren't just for looks.
