Built-in fly defense
Those long tufts hanging from a Highland's ears — the breed's "earrings" — aren't decoration. They can swish them to swat flies. Add the dossan over the eyes, sweeping lashes, and a back double-coated too thick for pests to love, and you have an animal that runs its own pest control.
They eat what other cattle won't
Highlands are excellent foragers and good converters of poor-quality roughage — they thrive on ground where fancier breeds go hungry. In a Wisconsin oak savanna restoration project, Highland cattle cleared and improved the land — and thrived doing it. A landscaping crew with horns.
Hybrid vigor on demand
Cross a Highland into another line and something better than averaging happens. It's called heterosis — cross a 2-pound-a-day-gain breed with a 3-pound one and the calves often beat the 2.5 average. Highland genetics are diverse enough to make that effect unusually strong, which is why the breed keeps showing up in other herds' pedigrees — including the show ring's club-calf world, where that hair coat is suddenly very fashionable.
Calm is a superpower too
In temperament scoring, 79% of Highlands rate "calm" or "exceptionally calm" when handled. It's the reason a farm like ours can walk guests into the pasture at all — and the reason you leave with photos that look impossible.
