A Morning of Chores With Your Farm Guide

The Scottish Highland herd grazing together in the pasture at Cedar Pond Farms in the foothills of the Smoky Mountains

By the time you pull into the gravel lot for a Fluffy Cow Experience, your guide has already done a full shift. The herd does not run on a tour schedule — it runs on the farm’s, and the farm starts early.

Hay and water first

Every day begins with the basics: hay out to the herd and fresh water in every trough. A Highland is a hardy animal, built for Scottish winters, but hardy is not the same as low-maintenance. Clean water and good forage are why the coats you are about to brush look the way they do.

A once-over for every animal

Before any guest arrives, the team looks at each cow — eyes, feet, appetite, the way it moves. Cattle are quiet about feeling poorly, so the people who see them every day are the ones who notice first. If an animal needs a rest day, it gets one, whatever the tour list says.

Brushes, halters and the calm you can feel

The reason a half-ton cow will lean into a stranger’s brush is handling — patient, everyday handling by the same people. Your guide is not introducing you to animals they met that morning. They are introducing you to animals they know by name, and who know them.

Then the gate opens

When you walk out to the pasture, everything you see — the clean water, the brushed coats, the cows that come over instead of walking away — is the morning’s work. That is why we tell guests, gently, that a tip for the team goes a long way. It is never required; it is a thank-you to the people who made the visit what it was.

How tipping your guide works → — where a tip goes, and how to leave one whether you booked with us or through GetYourGuide, Airbnb or Viator.
